The Philippines, one of the major producer of Coconuts, has been hit by several natural disasters during the last months, killing 28 people while injuring more than 320 people. Beyond the human tragedy, the typhoon Kammuri, which hit the Philippines in early December 2019, caused an estimated 116 Mio. USD damage on high value crops.
The situation grew even more serious when a second typhoon, Panfone, unleashed a heavy rainstorm just a few couple of weeks later on Christmas day.
But there remained only a short time to recover in the aftermath of the tropical storms. The year 2020 started with an explosive eruption of the Taal Volcano, located in the Quezon Region of Philippines, a major coconut producing region. Scientists are on alert of a worsening of the situation and advised to evacuate ash-covered villages in this region.
On the other side, the closure of one of the biggest Indonesian coconut mills (PT Harvard) is an important factor on the price increase.
These natural events seriously affect the coconut production and resulted in a world-wide crisis with a price increase for coconut products of more than 40%.
